A CHIPPY owner watched as his fish shop went up in smoke on Friday.
As he prepared for opening fat which had settled in the bottom of the extractor flue caught fire.
Smoke puthered out of the extractor chimney and out of the doors of Darn's on Summer Lane.
Eamon Lanigan of Station Road, said: "You couldn't see flames but smoke was coming out of the chimney, it was quite bad. It smelt like it was fat as we have had a chip pan fire before so I know what it is like. I think it will be shut for a while."
Barnsley fire station manager Jon Parkes said when they arrived on the scene just before 9.30am they were faced with dense fat smoke.
He said: "What you get with fast food places is a lot of fat settling that you can't see. It is very flammable and easily catches fire."
