THE Post Office has confirmed plans to close a third of Barnsley post offices before Christmas because the network is losing money.
The 15 closures are spread across the borough from Thurlstone to Grimethorpe. Local branches include Whitehill on Dodworth Road, Doncaster Road near the junction of Cemetery Road, Worsbrough Common and the counter within Bargain Booze at Smithies are on the list.
But the Smithies branch will stay open on a year long trial as an outreach PO with owner Manny Singh financing it himself.
Worsbrough Common Post Office has been in Ted Jackson's family for more than 70 years. He said the closure would be a loss to the area, especially the older people.
Ted, pictured above, said: "It's nearly all older people. They pay their bills, get their money out and have a natter. I think it's good for them."
Other areas affected include Royston, Cudworth, Broomhill, Hemingfield, Penistone, Silkstone Common, Hoyland, Barnburgh and Clayton.
