MORE THAN 60 years have passed since neighbours Joyce Parker and Hilda Pears were Barnsley Land Army girls but they have finally been recognised for their work during the second world war.

Joyce, 85, and Hilda, 78, of Milner Avenue, Penistone, both spent more than five years dairy farming in Yorkshire to help the war effort.

Joyce said: "It was a hard life but it was a great life. We were up working from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week. I had sole charge of a dairy herd." Both women thrilled when they received their commemorative scrolls and badges signed by the Prime Minister on the same day last week.

Hilda said: "We were so excited when we got them, to go 60 years then suddenly to be recognised is wonderful.

Joyce added: "I had a whiskey to celebrate when I got mine and I'll be wearing it with pride when I visit my son in America."
