A man thought his house was on fire when smoke from burning bales of hay poured through his open windows.
Brian Mayne, of Carlton Road, woke at around 6am on Saturday to find the area around his home covered with thick black smoke from the trailer of a broken down tractor.
Fire crews from Royston and Barnsley stations had been at the scene since 3am and called in police to close off the highway from Royston Lane to Industry Road. The owner of the tractor could not be found and it was several hours before fire-fighters managed to start the engine and move it off the road and onto a nearby field.
The fire was finally extinguished at about 9am and police reopened the road just before 11am. The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
