A FOUR-YEAR quarrel between walkers and a landowner over the status of footpaths at Staincross has gone to a public inquiry this week.
Users of the paths, which run from Woodhouse Lane through Wheatley Woods and another between Woodhouse Lane and Warren Lane, applied to Wakefield council to make them official public rights of way.
Their status came into question after notices were erected on the paths by landowner Philip Rowbottom, of Rowbottom Ltd, in February 2005 saying access was only allowed with permission and were closed to the public.
