A BRIERLEY town councillor has been suspended for being under the influence of alcohol at a council meeting and for remarks he made about the clerk.

Coun Mick Hanley was suspended for three months earlier this month and must not involve himself in any council business or attend council meetings.

A public notice submitted by borough secretary Andrew Frosdick to the Chronicle this week states Coun Hanley had been under the influence of alcohol.

He had 'conducted himself in a manner that had brought his own position and that of the town council into disrepute' and having 'brought into question the competence and integrity of the clerk' had failed to treat others with respect at the annual general meeting in May last year.

The sub committee of the borough council's standards board suspended him for two months for the first failure and for one month for the second.

Coun Hanley did not write a letter of apology to the clerk prior to the expiry of the first period of suspension.

He has 21 days to appeal.
