A TUG of war is set to break out over the SR Gent site after the owners submitted plans for 172 houses.

Barnsley Council wants to build a 2,000-pupil advanced learning centre on the site to replace Holgate and Kingstone Schools, despite local opposition.

The site's owners PriceWaterhouseCooper, who were appointed administrators of SR Gents when it ran into financial trouble in 2005, have been marketing the site as an employment opportunity since then without success.

They say because there has been no interest, housing should be considered as an alternative.

Their move comes as it was revealed the council was planning surveys of the land and one councillor believes their plan is about increasing the site's value.
