HORTICULTURIST from Hoyland has been selected to exhibit at the world's most famous flower show.

Steven Hickman, 52, will show his finest collection of agapanthus and tulbaghia at the Chelsea Flower Show in May.

He and wife Elaine have run the Hoyland Plant Centre on Greenside Lane for almost 25 years but this is the first time they have entered the prestigious contest.

"We have been doing the shows for so long now that we thought we would have a go at the big one," he said.

"Over the past five to six years we have won numerous medals and trophies but we haven't dared apply for this one."

The couple, who supply plants like shrubs, perennials, conifers and grasses to wholesalers, applied for the show in autumn and were delighted when they were accepted by the Royal Horticultural Society. They put their success down to the nature of their nursery which specialises in just the two types of plant.
