COUNCILLORS have asked officers to go back to a Thurnscoe firm and negotiate affordable housing before plans to redevelop its premises are agreed.

Warmsworth Stone's planning application for 24 houses at the Clayton Lane site was again before the planning board but councillors thought the firm was trying to sidestep rules which state developments of 25 or more dwellings should include affordable homes.

Coun Malcolm Price said: "Once again we have an application where there are 24 properties. The council report goes on to say in Thurnscoe there is a high proportion of social rented properties and the proposal would bring a much needed balance to the area.

"What they are saying is they don't need social rented housing in Thurnscoe but there are 9,000 people on the council waiting list. We all know we need affordable housing everywhere."
