A TEENAGER was sent home from school on Red Nose Day for wearing a red nose.

Edward Sheerien head John Brearley said some of his pupils would not be able to handle wearing them and that would cause bad behaviour.

Reece Beardsall, 14, of Elland Close, Athersley, insisted on wearing his and returned home when he refused to take it off.

Dad Jason said: "I phoned the head and told him I was bloody proud of my son for standing up for something he believed in. But he said I was swearing at him and hung the phone up on me. Well, I'm still bloody proud of him."

Mr Brearley said: "It's not that we don't support Comic Relief, we do. We have a collection and send a donation, and there are some sensible fund-raising activities. "But we're a 'national challenge school' and we need them in school, behaving and working. There are some pupils, with the best will in the world, if we let them wear red noses they'd get silly. They'd be pulling each others noses off and all sorts. One thing leads to another."
