PASSENGERS were evacuated from a burning bus in Monk Bretton on Wednesday.

Everyone escaped unharmed from the number 57 service travelling from Royston to Barnsley and passengers were transferred to another bus.

Stagecoach is investigating the cause of the fire which is though to be accidental. Plumes of black smoke could be seen from as far away as Pogmoor Road and Harborough Hills.

Paul Lynch, Stagecoach managing director, said: "We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the driver who reacted calmly and efficiently, by evacuating the passengers and calling the fire brigade immediately.

"All the passengers were escorted by the driver to another bus in order to continue their journey and no-one suffered any injury or distress.”
