A BEER can, a cigarette end, a fast food cup and some household waste landed four people with a total of £610 in fines and costs.
The cases were brought to Barnsley Magistrates Court by the council’s environmental regulatory services on July 20 as part of tough action against litter louts.
They included:
• Paul Jones, 31, from Southfield Road in Cudworth pleaded guilty to throwing a cigarette end out of a parked vehicle in Barnsley town centre. He had become abusive when approached by council staff who had witnessed the offence. He was fined £80 with £100 costs.
• Ryan Kerley, 24, of Broomhill View, Bolton-on-Dearne, was fined £80 with £100 costs, for throwing a beer can into a garden at the junction of West Avenue and Dearne Road.
• Adele Renshaw, 29, of Doncaster Road in Darfield was fined £50 with £50 costs after pleading guilty to leaving a McDonalds drinks cup on a wall in Barnsley town centre.
• Sharon Dougherty, 34, of Birkwood Avenue in Cudworth pleaded guilty to dumping household waste on the land to the rear of the property. She was fined £100 with £50 costs.
Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman for environmental services, said: “The courts are reflecting our determination to clamp down with the strength of the fines they are handing out, and I would hope the people who come before them have learnt their lesson.”
