A CHRISTIAN charity is rethinking its plans to rehabilitate ex-offenders and the homeless in Wath because of the level of anger shown by residents.

At the end of a heated meeting on Wednesday night, attended by about 200, Rev Alistair Sharp, of the Rotherham Homeless Project, said the Gateway scheme would be put on hold until at least Christmas.

The worries included the proximity of Gateway (located in St Martin's House) to Wath C of E school and the safety of residents should the clients with a criminal background and a history of drug and alcohol abuse relapse.

Residents and Wath National Action Group, leading the campaign to stop the project, say they don't want people from all over the UK bringing their problems to Wath.

One resident fumed: "You are going to bring these dangerous people into Wath, what dangers are they going to create? "Wath has enough problems without bringing people from all corners of the UK."
