A BUILDER who has a terminal brain tumour has had his 'last glimmer of hope' crushed by health chiefs - who are refusing to fund treatment that could prolong his life.

David Gladwin is now planning to appeal against the decision which has devastated him.

He has undergone years of treatment including brain surgery, two bouts of radiotherapy and several courses of chemotherapy. None has worked and surgeons have said it is no longer possible to operate on the growth.

Experts cannot estimate his life expectancy but say without treatment his condition is terminal.

David, of Malincroft, Mapplewell, and his young family were given hope when consultant oncologist David Levy told him another chemotherapy drug is suitable for tackling brain tumours.

There is anecdotal evidence the drug, Avastin, can be successful where other drugs failed. But David's hopes of receiving the treatment have been dashed by NHS Barnsley which has said the drug is not licensed for treating brain tumours and there is not enough evidence it will work. As such it will not pay.
