LABOUR re-secured its one seat majority on Barnsley Council yesterday by winning the St Helen's by-election.
The party romped home with 1,520, with a majority of more than 900 votes over nearest rivals, the BNP.
The new councillor Roy Butterwood said: "I'm absolutely elated to be back as a councillor once more in the St Helen's Ward, and I look forward to getting back to working on behalf of my community."
Mr Butterwood had originally served as a councillor in the ward from 2004 to 2007. He said he was inspired to stand again when he saw how vigorously the BNP was targeting the ward.
He said: "I'm glad I did it. This win is a victory for Barnsley Labour, and for all people who really care about their community."
The seat was vacant following the sudden death of David Bostwick in the summer.
Before he died, Labour had a majority of one - its worst position in the town for decades. That margin has been restored.
Barnsley Central MP Eric Illsley said it sent a strong message that the extremism of the BNP was not welcome in Barnsley.
Coun Steve Houghton said: "We've fought a positive campaign, and it's a fantastic result."
