THERE has been lots of interest in a picture of a 'rag and bone' man which appeared in an earlier edition of Memories.

Graham Rhodes, who lives in Sheffield, bought the picture at a Penistone auction and he was told the scene had been captured in Barnsley - most probably in the Summer Lane area.

Since publication, we have received several letters and telephone calls with suggestions of where the man was collecting his wares, the most popular being in Fitzwilliam Street, off Sackville Street. There was also another suggestion that it was in Albert Street in the town centre.

However, we have now obtained a positive identification from Harry Hunt who told us the picture was taken at Millbanks, Stockport, about 40 years ago.

The rag and bone man has been identified as Jack Harrison who worked for rag and bone merchants, John Broad's of Stockport. The tall building on the right hand side at the bottom of the steep hill was occupied by Frederick Robinson's Brewers of Stockport.

"I was talking to Jack Harrison's brother, Joe, and he immediately recognised his brother," said Mr Hunt.

My thanks to everyone who took the trouble of contacting me regarding this picture.
