THE Arctic monkeys played a secret gig at the Citrus Rooms - only yards from the college where they studied.

Along eastgate on wednesday, fans queued for hours in the rain as word spread that the first 500 to turn up would be allowed in.

News of the gig appeared on the band's website for two hours, which was enough to create a line that stretched well past the Chronicle offices by the time the doors opened at 7.30pm.

The last time the Monkeys played in Barnsley was their turning point gig at Birdwell Club last year which reportedly sold out in ten minutes.
