THERE was delight across the district with record GCSE results. Kirk Balk High students achieved the best results in the school’s history, and at Sheffield High School a Hoyland girl got 11 straight As.
Among the celebrations at Kirk Balk three pupils also got straight As. James Sylvester, of Pilley, received eight A*s and three As.
Elizabeth Taylor and Charlotte Green, both from Hoyland, each got seven A*s and three As.
Charlotte said: “I'm shocked because I expected to get some Bs but I'm very happy.”
James was equally delighted and added: “I’ll be going out tonight to celebrate.” Headteacher Val Malcolm said she was proud of her pupils. There were 64 As in all — the best total the school has achieved. She said: “This is the result of considerable hard work from the pupils, staff and parents and we want to build on this for the future.”
At Sheffield High Nicola Weetch continued her family's personal celebrations by achieving eight A*s and three As. Only last week sister Georgina was awarded four straight As at A-Level and was accepted to go to Oxford University.
But it was not just delight. Jade Warfield, of Kirk Balk, revealed she had spent the morning crying with worry before picking up her results. She was concerned poor results would damage her chances of becoming a midwife. She said: “I couldn't sleep last night. I thought I wouldn't pass science but now I'm so relieved because I got a C and passed everything else. I'm well happy.”
