THE first woman miller has been appointed at Worsbrough Mill.

Catherine Roebuck's official title is supervisor at Worsbrough Mill, Cannon Hall and the Cooper Gallery, but part of her job will include milling at Worsbrough.

One of her first tasks has been learning the age old trade of traditional corn milling.

Coun William Newman, cabinet spokesman for development, said: “According to the archive evidence, Catherine is the first female miller at Worsbrough. Although Anne Shaw was recorded as the miller at Worsbrough between 1804 and 1817, she did not take part in the actual milling herself.”

“Archives show she was the owner of the mill but employed local men to operate it and undertake the milling process.”
