THREE Barnsley schools ran up a £250,000 legal bill defending themselves at employment tribunals and disciplinary hearings.

One of the biggest spenders was Richard Newman primary school which spent more than £100,000 over the same four year period.

The school, at Athersley South, is also being probed by Barnsley Council after allegations about its finances and the way it is managed were sent to councillors.

Between 2006 and 2010 the legal cost to schools was £246,043. But according to the council, that "mainly relates to three schools".
