LITTLEWORTH School senior football team of 1948 had bags of talent.
They won a haul of medals and some of the team went on to better things – playing for Barnsley Boys and, in turn, for league clubs.
The team’s centre forward, Arthur Gill, has loaned to Memories a photograph of the team taken after winning a trophy.
But, he cannot recall what the trophy was for. Can any of our readers help? He has named the lads as, back row, left to right: A Kirk, D Watson, A Barraclough, P Booth. Front row: C Parks, K Blower, A Gill, M McCulloch (c), L Jones, P Watson, B Millard.
Mr Gill does not know the name of the teacher on the far left of the back row, but he has named the others as: Mr Bayliss (second left, back row); Mr Bagshaw (second right, back row) and headmaster Mr Grundy (first right, back row).
Peter Booth and Arthur Gill, a prolific goal scorer, played for Barnsley Boys during English Schools’ Trophy campaign of the 1948-49 season. Unfortunately, Arthur was injured in the semi-final and was unable to play in the final against Derby County.
The first leg of the final at Oakwell attracted a crowd of 27,000, Barnsley winning 3-1 with goals from Lake, Levitt and Archer.
With this victory behind them, Barnsley travelled to Derby County’s Baseball Ground four days later for the second leg where, once again, they put on a splendid performance in front of a 21,000-stong crowd to win 1-0 through Levitt.
The team were welcomed home to a storm of cheers, rattles and bells from supporters who lined the streets. Littleworth’s soccer team played no small part in the success of the Barnsley Boys’ team that year.
“They were good days and we really enjoyed playing for our school. We had a good team,†said Jim.
