PLANS to demolish Holgate School could be stalled after a former pupil suggested the building be referred to English Heritage for listing.

Richard Holroyd, 61, contacted the commission after plans to demolish the school and replace it with a 200-space staff car park for the new Advanced Learning Centre were approved by the council.

English Heritage is now examining the case to consider whether the building be listed.

"I said that there were not many great buildings in Barnsley, only a few with architectural merit and I believed this was one of them."

Holgate was built in 1909 and designed by architects Crouch, Butler and Savage who also designed Manchester Art Gallery.

A spokesman for English Heritage confirmed that a report was being put together. She said: "There are a lot of different factors we have to consider on a case by case basis."

She added once a building is listed it does not protect it from demolition but a very good reason has to be put forward.
