GRITTING of pavements and roads on housing estates and side streets could be done by teams of residents and not the council.

Barnsley Council wants volunteers to join teams of about ten willing to clear snow on behalf of their community.

One representative will be given shovels and high-visibility clothing for their team.

The majority of residential streets are not gritted by the council. Only 46 per cent of the road network is gritted as a matter of routine in freezing temperatures, with side streets and estate roads left mostly untouched.

Coun Bill Gaunt said it would be a good idea to set up formalised teams of volunteers.

He said: “I’m all for helping people to help themselves. The problem is, what happens to the ‘anomalies’ the roads where there isn’t a good mix of people, and it’s mainly elderly people. They can’t do it.”

The council wants volunteers to ring 773555.
