Barnsley conceded a late goal from Nigerian veteran Kanu and went down 1-0 at Portsmouth on Saturday.
It was a very poor game, although the Reds looked on course for a point from a goalless stalemate before Kanu came off the bench to head in the winner.
Barnsley did not manage a single effort on target in the entire match.
Paul McShane delivered a typically combative display on his Reds debut at centre-back but Mark Robins has much to ponder as he prepares for Tuesday's local derby with Leeds at Elland Road.
