A dangerous structures engineer has told fire crews that Darton High school is too dangerous for them to enter - because of fears it could collapse.

A fire started at the school, which is being demolished, at about 2pm on Wednesday and four fire engines including crews from Barnsley, Royston and Cudworth and an aerial platform have been attempting to bring the blaze under control.

Incident Commander Simon Dillon issued a statement at 4.30pm. He said: “The structural engineer has assessed the building and confirmed that it is too dangerous to let our crews enter. We are tackling the fire from outside the building using jets, and I expect us to remain here for at least the next two hours.”

It is not known how the fire started.
