It will be an offence to have an unleashed dog in any of Barnsley's cemeteries under new council proposals.

A council report says there is a problem with dog fouling on graves, which causes 'understandable upset and distress'.

Dog wardens need to witness dog fouling to take action against the owners, and the visual obstruction of gravestones, and dogs being able to roam free, hinders this. The council's cabinet is planning to use its legal powers to invoke a dog control order to firm up existing regulations.

The proposal is to make it a requirement of dog owners to keep dogs on leads at all times in cemeteries, meaning fouling would be less likely and it would be easier for officers to witness people failing to clear it up.
