Compensation payments for women who suffered pain and scarring following botched breast operations at Barnsley Hospital has reached nearly £1.2m.

New figures revealed the trust has paid out £1,189,059 to 26 women operated on by consultant surgeon Purvanes-wary Markandoo between 2005 and 2008. Most of them were having surgery for breast cancer.

And the bill is expected to increase with legal costs estimated to be about £500,000.

The investigation into Dr Markandoo was launched by the General Medical Council after 35 women complained about their treatment. The consultant, who earned up to £122,000 a year, was suspended on full pay in 2006 and left the trust two years later.
