Debenhams has confirmed it will open a new department store as the centrepiece of the redeveloped town centre.

The store, scheduled to open in 2014, will create 200 jobs, almost as many as in  the Sheffield branch. Leader of the council Steve Houghton said it was a ‘huge boost’ to the £100m redevelopment project, which will also create a market complex, multi-screen cinema, restaurant and other shops.

Andrew Denniff, executive director, Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said it was a shot in the arm for the whole of the town centre.
