BARNSLEY Woolley started their ECB Yorkshire Premier South season with a win at Shiregreen and will now look to back it up in a derby at home to Doncaster Town.

The hosts were 80 for no wicket but were bowled out for 159 with Mansoor Shinwari taking six wickets and Sean Whitehead four.

South African debutant Whitehead then hit 66 not out off 47 balls, sharing a stand of 86 with another debutant Jash Giyanani who added 49 off 37.

They won by seven wickets with more than 22 overs left.

Captain Boeta Beukes said: “We’re very happy.

“We started poorly and they were about 80 for none off ten overs but Shaun and Manny came together and got seven wickets pretty quickly which totally changed the game.

“We let them get away from us again a bit at the end which was frustrating but we got the win with the bat.

“Shaun batted with Stevie Walters for an important partnership then him and Jash just took the game away.

“Shaun looks like a really good signing, that’s all we can really say at this stage.

“It’s great for Manny to get six wickets.

“He’s only 22 and we signed him last season for the second team.

“It’s the first time he has taken five or more in an innings for the first team.”

Barnsley now host Doncaster Town on Saturday. Beukes said: “To win the first game is very big for us. We usually go on a bit of a run when we win. But it’s only one game and we won’t get carried away.

“I am just pleased for the team because they have worked really hard all winter.

“Doncaster will be a bit more of a challenge. We usually have good games against them and hopefully we get another win.”

Cawthorne lost by nine wickets at home to Doncaster Town.

Cawthorne – who started on minus two points due to ‘the failure to complete captain’s reports at the end of 2024 season’ like three other clubs – were bowled out for 127. Harry Allinson smacked 79 with nine fours and five sixes but no other player made more than 15.
