BARNSLEY dementia charity BIADS are gearing up for a busy week starting from Monday - and they’re hoping to showcase their work.

Town centre-based Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support (BIADS) announced last month that it’s facing severe financial troubles, plunging its future into doubt.

Established in 2009 with the vision of being an independent charity offering help to those living with the debilitating illnesses, it’s currently the only Barnsley service that exclusively provides support.

Linda Pattison, chief executive, told the Chronicle that a minimum of £15,000 a month is required to keep afloat.

Next week is Dementia Action Week - and the organisation is showcasing the work they do.

Linda said: “The main national focus of this week is the importance of an early diagnosis for people affected by dementia.

“A diagnosis is vital to give people access to the care, treatment and support they desperately need.

“Yet, incredibly, one in three people with dementia do not have a diagnosis.

“Here in Barnsley BIADS is hoping to reach more people affected by dementia by holding an open house on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10am and 12pm at our dementia centre on Dodworth Road.

“Staff will also be available at Emmanuel Church, Huddersfield Road between 10am and 12pm on Tuesday.

“Please come along and find out how we can support you.”

And next Wednesday a meeting will be held to discuss the organisation’s future.

Linda added: “We will be meeting with representatives of the statutory authorities on Wednesday to showcase our services and their value to work with them to try to ensure our future as our support for Barnsley people affected by dementia is crucial.”
