A PUBLIC right of way which was the scene of an incident involving a youngster who sustained injuries from an electric fence will be made safer.

The eight-year-old girl was walking on a path near Farmhouse Lane, Pogmoor, to school in Gawber on Tuesday.

The Chronicle understands the girl tripped on a half-buried lump of metal and landed on an electric fence used to keep in livestock.

She sustained burns to her hands and the council’s rights of way team have been out to the location.

Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “We’re sorry to hear about this incident and sincerely hope the young girl is recovering well.

“Our rights of way team have been out to inspect the location and contacted the landowner requesting that a number of issues are promptly addressed.

“This includes removing the remains of an old fence post and placing signs on the electric fence - which is in place to prevent livestock from leaving the field - to alert walkers that the fence is electrified.”
