YOUNG Freddie Davies has been named as just one of 20 Scouts across the entirety of the UK to win a special ‘Unsung Hero’ award.

Freddie, 14, shaved his head in solidarity with his mother Kelsie who was undergoing cancer treatment and raised more than £2,500 for the hospital’s chemotherapy ward in the process.

He subsequently won a Proud of Barnsley award for his actions and at a special ceremony held at the home of UK Scouts, Gilwell Park, he was named an ‘Unsung Hero’ for his charity work.

The great news is that Kelsie is now cancer-free and Freddie, who is a member of the Scorpions Explorer Scout Unit, has continued to raise much-needed funds for other charities.

The Unsung Heroes Award is a coveted personal achievement which recognises the amazing skills and endeavours of young people across the Scouts community - from Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and people in the Scout network.

Chief Scout Dwayne Fields had the honour of celebrating Freddie who was one of 20 young Scouts selected from over 100 nominations - out of 475,000 Scouts across the UK.

Dwayne said: “A huge congratulations to the winners of this remarkable award for acts of courage and selflessness in the community.

“Being part of the Scouts provides young people with skills they take with them through life, and the stories of these young people represent the highest form of Scouting values.
