HOSPITAL bosses who revealed their plan to transform breast cancer services in Barnsley have praised the public - after more than £70,000 was generated before the appeal’s official launch.

The Barnsley Hospital Charity revealed its new Breast Care Appeal - the Gawber site’s most recent fundraising mission - in the hope of enhancing the care the town’s women receive.

It seeks to raise £250,000 to fund a transformation of the trust’s dedicated breast care unit, where patients are seen by specialist doctors, nurses and radiology team for consultations, imaging assessment and biopsies.

More than 7,300 patients are seen annually in the unit with a variety of symptoms including breast lumps, nipple changes and lumps in the armpit.

This equates to around 142 patients per week and, of those, an average of around 250 breast cancer patients are treated annually.

Funds from the appeal will go towards creating a healing space where sensitivity is at the heart of every detail.

The official launch, held on June 11, offered guests a powerful insight into the experiences of the patients who attend the unit annually.

With approximately 250 breast cancer diagnoses per year, the unit is a lifeline for hundreds of individuals and their families.

“From shark dives to skydives and everything in between, supporters across Barnsley have shown remarkable dedication, demonstrating the heart and passion behind the appeal.

“Guests at the launch heard first-hand from clinical staff about how the funds raised will make a lasting difference.

The breast unit is home to a multi-disciplinary team of specialist doctors, nurses, radiology staff, breast care nurses, and prosthetic experts, who deliver high-quality care to patients facing some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

The new appeal will ensure that the physical space matches the standard of clinical excellence provided every day.

Jane added: “We’re just getting started but with the ongoing support of the amazing people and businesses of Barnsley, the future is full of promise.”
