Barnsley Council has chosen a new chief executive to replace Phil Coppard who left in December.
Diana Terris, chief executive of Warrington Borough Council, has been offered the job.
In a statement through Warrington Council, she said: "I am delighted that Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council have offered me the position of chief executive and while it is subject to the usual formalities, am looking forward enormously to taking up my new role.
"I will leave Warrington with a huge sense of pride... I will certainly be heading across the Pennines with some happy memories."
She has been chief executive at Warrington, Cheshire, for five years. Mr Coppard left his job after ten years following disagreements with the council's leaders about where cuts should be made.
A Barnsley Council spokesman said: "Diana Terris, currently Chief Executive at Warrington Council, has been offered the post of Chief Executive. This appointment is subject to approval by Full Council on 26 April and further details will be released after that meeting."
