A ‘LIFESAVING’ campaign to reduce the speed limit near a junction which has been named as one of the country’s worst for accident rates has been backed by an MP sparking optimism that a change could occur.
Marie Tidball, who represents Penistone and Stocksbridge, spoke out about ongoing issues plaguing the A616 Whams Road and its crossroads with Bents Road and Lee Lane at Hazlehead.
Despite campaigners’ long-running calls for a speed limit reduction on the 60mph road which has been blighted by crashes in recent years including the deaths of father and son Christopher and Mackenzie Mellor in 2019 so far their calls have not been answered.
It’s hoped that with the MP’s involvement as well as Barnsley Council’s recent decision to reduce the speed limit further along Lee Lane outside Millhouse Primary School will spark action.
She said: “My heart goes out to those who have been affected by previous tragedies on this stretch of road and those who may have experienced injury from other incidents.
“I have picked up and responded to a number of pieces of constituents’ casework on this section of road.
“The recent response from SYMCA demonstrates there is an opportunity for Barnsley Council to put forwards a proposal to reduce the speed limit.
“I would endorse, for this to be effective, that this shouldn’t just be a speed limit change, but needs some careful consideration of additional road engineering measures as well.
“I’d urge Barnsley Council and SYMCA to come together to put forward some proposals in consultation with my constituents.
“There is an opportunity to make this section of road safer, to put constituents’ minds at rest and prevent future harm.”
Although South Yorkshire Police would have to agree to a speed limit reduction, they recently revealed they have ‘never formally objected’ to one coming into force.
However, no approach has been made as yet by Barnsley Council, who said the road will be monitored.
Coun James Higginbottom, cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, said: “Road safety is a top priority for us and we are grateful to residents who raise concerns about speeding and road conditions in their communities.
“A package of road safety improvements was installed at the crossroads in the summer of 2022, and the completed scheme has made a significant improvement to the visibility.
“We will continue to monitor with South Yorkshire Police.
“We regularly liaise with partners, including the police, to ensure we are up to date with the latest data and guidance on speed management.
“Any changes to speed limits must be supported by evidence and, where necessary, appropriate engineering measures to ensure they are effective and enforceable.
“We remain committed to working with all relevant partners to explore options that support safer roads for everyone.”
