Former Barnsley co-chairman Paul Conway has been in a Spanish prison for weeks amid allegations of fraud, according to reports.

The American businessman was part of the group who bought the Reds in 2017 then served as co-chairman and, briefly, as acting chief executive before being ousted from the board in 2022. He is still thought to own a small percentage of the Oakwell club.

He owned or part-owned a series of clubs around Europe, several of which were relegated under him and experienced financial difficulties including Belgian club KV Oostende which eventually folded last year after Conway left.

According to the Athletic, an investigating judge at the District Court of West Flanders issued a European Arrest Warrant for Conway who was arrested on a business trip to Spain last month. He is reportedly fighting extradition to Belgium.

There are allegedly six fraud charges related to Oostende’s bankruptcy.

Conway strongly denies wrongdoing, according to the Athletic.
