BARNSLEY’S favourite funnyman, Charlie Williams, got the funeral send-off he would have wanted on Tuesday: a standing ovation both inside and outside the church.
St. Mary’s was full of mourners wishing to pay their respects to the comedian with the infectious smile who was born at Royston on December 23 1929, the son of a Barbadian father and Yorkshire mother.
Scores more waited patiently outside to applaud as the hearse set off at the head of a 40-vehicle cortege to Ardsley Crematorium.
