A YOUNG couple who ‘lost everything’ in a disastrous blaze - including their nine-month-old cocker spaniel - just months after moving into their first home together say they’re overwhelmed with the support they’ve received.
On Saturday afternoon, at around 5pm, crews from Dearne, Edlington and Barnsley stations arrived on Monk Terrace to tackle a house fire.
The crews fought the blaze for over four hours before it was finally put out - but for 21-year-old Elisha Rollinson and her partner 23-year-old Harry Wheeler their whole world has fallen apart.
Their young puppy Miles was inside the house at the time of the blaze - with a cause not yet known - and died.
Elisha told the Chronicle: “I was gone for about an hour and a half because I’d nipped to the shop and then went to my cousin’s birthday party.
“I came back to the house and there were just flames coming out of my front window.
“I went to the back door and managed to open it but just a big cloud of black smoke hit me in the face.
“My main priority was to get my dog out so I kicked down the front door but I couldn’t get into the living room because of the fire.”
Firefighters arrived a short time later but were unable to save anything from inside the property.
Elisha added: “I went into fight or flight mode - it was surreal.
“We’re both absolutely devastated.
“I knew as soon as I saw the flames that Miles had died.
“I tried to get into the house a few times to save him but the smoke was too much.”
The pair, who had only moved into their first home just months prior to the blaze at the weekend, say they’ve been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
“We’d literally just done the house up,” she said.
“It was our first home.
“We’d spent thousands on the kitchen and the bathroom.
“All our possessions are gone.
“We’ve got nothing.
“All we have left is the clothes that are on our backs.”
A fundraiser has subsequently been set up by Elisha’s mum, Rachael Heeley in a bid to raise money for the pair following the blaze.
She said: “The devastation of losing Miles is only the tip of the iceberg as they have lost their whole life in the house fire.
“Savings, work equipment, essentials, memories and savings - the list is endless.
“They’d worked so hard for everything.
“My goal is to raise enough funds to keep them afloat for the next fee weeks until they are in a place where they can start to rebuild their lives.
“Understandably they are heartbroken at the moment and are finding it hard to start again.
“But as a family we are rallying together to provide as much as we can but help from our community would be so greatly appreciated.”

Elisha added: “We’re currently living at my partner’s mum’s house.
“All of our friends and family have been so supportive.
“There was a lot of memories in that house and they’re gone.
“But people have been really supportive.
“I work for the ambulance service and my colleagues have come together and helped out which is really nice.”
