THE Honeywell Good Food Pantry proudly celebrated welcoming its 1,000th user earlier this week.
The pantry, located at Honeywell Community Centre, is one of many located across the borough aimed at reducing food waste and supporting residents with access to nutritious food options.
They typically involve a small weekly fee for access to food items.
It opens its doors every Wednesday from 12pm to 2pm, offering affordable food essentials to Honeywell residents for a nominal fee of just £3 per shop.
On Wednesday, Barrie Armitage became the 1,000th user of the shop.
He was welcomed by Couns Phil Lofts and Jo Newing, along with the secretary of the pantry Gillian Nixon.
Barrie, who is a volunteer at Barnsley Hospice, said: “I didn’t realise until I arrived today that I would be the 1,000th user of the Good Food Pantry - what a pleasant surprise.
“I can understand why it is so popular - for a small fee you can pick up healthy, nutritious food that would normally go to waste.”
Coun Newing added: “We were thrilled to share this achievement with Barrie and the Old Town community today and we look forward to continuing supporting the Honeywell Good Food Pantry mission to provide affordable food options and foster a stronger community spirit.”
