A REAL celebration of a Yorkshire tradition is beind held today.

Knurr and spell, a once-forgotten pastime with deep roots in this area, has been brought back to life by a group of enthusiasts.

It involves whacking a small ball (knurr) as far as you can with a piece of wood (spell).

Today, Yorkshire Day, Thurgoland will host the second ever knurr and spell open championship.

The event is open from 4pm for people to give the opportunity to practice and get ready for the championship which starts at 7pm.

People are invited to attend the event which is being held on Thurgoland Rec.
