WOMBWELL Town are still waiting for their first goals and points since promotion to the NCEL Premier after a 3-0 loss at Tadcaster Albion on Tuesday.
The hosts took the lead just before half-time then added two more after the break. They have now lost both games in the league this season, each away from home.
Manager Karl Rose said: “Everything that could go wrong, went wrong.
“We had two pull-out late on – one because his dog had been knocked over and the other because he couldn’t get out of work. Then a car with four players in it broke down on the way to the game and we had to send someone to get them which delayed kick-off for 20 minutes.
“It was horrendous preparation, but we actually played well and could have won on another day.
“We think we had a stonewall penalty at 0-0 then they scored a great goal from outside the box to take the lead.
“We got an injury after making all our subs so played with ten men then made a stupid mistake for the second goal which killed it.
“The third goal flatters them, in my opinion, but they are a good side who have won all their matches so far.”
Rose is not panicking despite the disappointing start to the season.
He said: “It’s a bit worrying that we haven’t scored in three away games in all competitions.
“We were toothless and need to be better in both boxes like last season when we were the second top-scorers in the country at our level.
“We’re playing some good football but we have to adapt to the pace of this league and be more clinical.
“We will look to bring in another striker with a bit more quality.
“We won’t feel sorry for ourselves, there will be no knee-jerk reactions or panicking but we’ll have honest conversations.”
Town are now due to host Parkgate in the second FA Cup preliminary qualifying round on Saturday then visit Liversedge in the league on Tuesday. Rose said: “We were fantastic in the last round – probably the best we’ve ever played
“We’re really looking forward to the game.
“It’s magical and historical to be in the FA Cup. Cup runs are what you remember and they make a lot of money.
“We got £1,100 for being in the last round and £1,400 in this one, plus the bigger gates.”
Penistone Church were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Eccleshill United on Saturday, having won their first two league games.
Church are now due to host Tadcaster Albion on Saturday then Rossington Main on Wednesday.
