Barnsley dropped points for the first time this season as they conceded a late equaliser having played for more than 40 minutes with ten men in a 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers.

David McGoldrick opened the scoring early in the second half but Vimal Yoganathan was sent off five minutes later.

Former Barnsley man John McAtee levelled on 86 minutes.

Barnsley made one change from the side who beat Burton Albion a week earlier with the injured Mael de Gevigney replaced by Jack Shepherd who was back from suspension.

Jono Bland played at right-back with Shepherd the right centre-back next to Josh Earl.

Bolton almost took the lead in the third minute when, after clearing a Reds free-kick, Thierry Gale burst down the left and squared to Amario Cozier-Duberry who was denied one-on-one by goalkeeper Murphy Cooper.

The visitors’ fast wingers were a constant threat but Barnsley grew into the first half.

Davis Keillor-Dunn saw a free-kick pushed away by the away goalkeeper before Luca Connell’s left-wing corner hit Shepherd a few yards out and bounced just wide.

David McGoldrick volleyed wide from a tight angle on the right after being picked out by a fine Nathanel Obgeta cross following a long and impressive passing move by the hosts.

On the stroke of half-time, Shepherd gifted the ball to Joel Randall just outside his box and Cozier-Duberry was played through but curled just wide of the top left corner.

The opener arrived two minutes after the break when McGoldrick latched onto a pass down the left, beat a defender and fired low past the goalkeeper from a tight angle on the left.

Bolton almost levelled immediately when Josh Sheehan’s free-kick was headed on by Gale and Eoin Toal nodded onto the post from close range.

Yoganathan was dismissed soon after as, after being cautioned for pushing the also-booked Mason Burstow in the first half, he received another yellow card after a foul on Josh Dacres-Cogley.

Bolton did not create many chances for the next 25 minutes but put on pressure towards the end.

Burstow shot over ten yards out after meeting a low cross from the right. Shepherd then cleared off the line from a Cozier-Duberry volley after Ibrahim Sissoko robbed Keillor-Dunn of the ball.

The leveller came when a right-wing corner was headed towards goal by Toal and McAtee touched in on the line.

Cooper made a fantastic save in injury-time, diving full length to touch a Toal header out of his bottom right corner.

McAtee then headed wide on 96 minutes from a cross by Ethan Erhahon and Toal nodded wide with the last action.
