BERNSLAI Homes have promised major home improvements scheduled for 2005 will begin by April next year after an investigation was requested to find out why there had been delays.
The cabinet investigation was requested by councillors at last Monday’s area forum after council tenants complained of being left in limbo for two years.
Hoyland residents on Hill Crest, Longfields Crescent and Headlands Row were told in 2004 their houses would be brought up to national guideline standards between June and August 2005.
Many of the properties, including old people’s bungalows, are in need of repair. Roofing is unsound, flooring uneven and there is rising damp. New kitchens and bathrooms are promised, and insulation will be installed.
But after two years the work under the decent homes scheme remains undone.
Bernslai Homes, the arms-length management company responsible for council houses, sent out a letter informing of the delays last August. But residents say there has been no official word since. The uncertainty has meant they cannot decorate or make home-improvements.
