CLUB PAY TRIBUTE TO STRIKER BARRIE

FORMER Barnsley striker Barrie Thomas’ death was announced this week at the age of 88.

Thomas signed in 1966 when the Reds were in financial trouble and languishing in Division Four, on the same day as John Evans with whom he forged a legendary partnership.

He scored 22 goals in 50 Reds games, including eight at the start of the 1967/68 promotion season before sustaining an injury which ended his career. He had made his name at Scunthorpe, where he is one of the highest scorers ever, then impressed with Newcastle in the top flight and was reportedly in the provisional England squad for the 1962 World Cup.

A club statement read: “The thoughts of everyone at Barnsley Football Club are with Barrie's friends and family. Once a Red, always a Red.”
