Barnsley are hoping to find a 'resolution' for Kelechi Nwakali with overseas transfer markets still open.

Nwakali, who has two years left on his contract, is not in Conor Hourihane’s plans and the Reds are looking to either sell or loan the Nigeria midfielder.

The vast majority of leagues’ windows around Europe are now closed or due to close by the weekend.

Sporting director Mladen Sormaz told the Chronicle: “We’re working foreign markets. We’re just trying to come to a resolution. There is nothing firm on the table but we’ve had a few inquiries that we’re going to follow up on and hopefully see one through to completion.”

A criticism of Nwakali has been that, while he is clearly a technically skilled player, he has struggled with the off-the-ball work required of a defensive midfielder in Barnsley’s system.

Sormaz said: “We had a few League One clubs inquire for him, and even League Two, so other people are seeing something there as well. The biggest thing is maybe the style of play we brought him into was maybe wrong for him.

“He’s not settled or established himself. So it’s fair to say, looking back, it’s not one you would necessarily repeat.

“But we are always required to take some risks and this one hasn’t paid off.”
