THE landlady at a popular Wombwell pub admits she was upset with the backlash she received after flying flags at the front of the venue - especially considering she put them up to support the armed forces community.
Sharon Lang has run a number of community events at the Prince of Wales and even runs a warm space for residents in need.
The pub has recently been refurbished with the flags, that were previously flown at the venue, being put back up.
However, with the rise of ‘Operation Raise The Colours’ - which organisers say is a patriotic act while others interpret the flag as a hostile sentiment - Sharon says she has received backlash online.
She said that a Facebook page shared her picture without explanation, potentially trying to ‘incite’ an argument around the flags.
But she’s flying the flags for the Armed Forces Breakfast Club which she helps run - and she’s got a special event coming up next month.
“I put the new flags up, we’ve got a big date on October 4 where we have the mayor coming,” she said.
“I’ve always had flags on the front of the pub.
“There’s Army, Royal Air Force and Navy flags.
“My photo was taken and put ‘new flags up at the Prince of Wales’ - there was nothing about the event we’re doing.
“It’s just inciting something that isn’t there to be incited.
“All we want to do is support these veterans.”
