Barnsley suffered a fourth straight defeat in all competitions as they went down 2-1 at League Two Notts County in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening.
The Reds trailed 1-0 at half-time then Davis Keillor-Dunn levelled just after the break but Jono Bland was sent off minutes later.
County dominated the remainder of the match and scored an 89th-minute winner in Barnsley’s first group game of three.
Conor Hourihane made eight changes from their last league game, with only Davis Keillor-Dunn, Jono Bland and Caylan Vickers keeping their places.
Kieren Flavell made his first start of the season in goal while coming into the side were Mael de Gevigney, Jake Rooney, Connor Barratt, Neil Farrugia, Vimal Yoganathan, Jon Russell and Reyes Cleary.
The hosts started on top and took the lead in the eighth minute when Maziar Kouhyar beat Farrugia easily on the left and set up Jayden Luker who could turn in space in the box and find the bottom right corner from about 15 yards.
Luker nearly made it 2-0 two minutes later but was denied by Flavell from close range after Allasana Jatta beat Yoganathan on the left and saw his cross deflected straight to the midfielder.
Vickers shot wide of the bottom left corner from 15 yards after good work on the right by Farrugia then, at the other end, Tom Iorpenda’s effort from the right whizzed across the face of goal.
Keillor-Dunn should have levelled on 40 minutes but shot wide of the bottom left corner ten yards out unmarked having been set up by Cleary after good passes by Vickers and Yoganathan.
Barnsley did level early in the second half, Keillor-Dunn firing emphatically into the top left corner after Cleary beat two men on the left and crossed low.
The Reds could have taken the lead seconds later but Farrugia shot well over after a good run and cross by Cleary. But their momentum was stalled by the red card as Bland received a second booking for throwing the ball away in frustration after a throw-in decision went against him.
Flavell made a good save to keep out a header by home substitute Will Jarvis then an even better one getting down to his right to keep out a low 15-yard effort from the same player after he cut in from the right.
Nick Tsaroulla’s cross then hit the base of the left post before Tyrese Hall blasted a good chance over from about ten yards after meeting a bouncing right-wing cross.
Harrison Iwunze looked to have won it late on but, as he slid in to turn home a right-wing cross from a couple of yards out, he missed the ball with his foot and it went in on off his hand.
Hall eventually scored when he smashed home from close range after Jarvis was played in on the right and crossed low.
In the 95th minute, Luca Connell’s corner was headed wide by fellow substitute Josh Earl.
