MARGARET Denton’s status as a pillar of the Thurgoland community hasn’t gone unnoticed.
As a lifelong resident of the village, Margaret, 81, served for many years teaching youngsters at Thurgoland Primary.
Following her retirement, she has continued to devote her time to the school as a volunteer helper.
This involves helping children read and offering classroom support.
Now, she has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award to mark her tireless dedication to helping others.
Margaret is also a prominent member of the Holy Trinity Church
She ran the Sunday School for many years, alongside handling writing, publishing and distribution for the church’s magazine.
Spending much of her time singing in both the church and Thurgoland Community Choir, she has helped to organise countless activities.
Throughout the 1970s, Margaret and her husband Harold helped to raise money through weekly raffle draws that were sold in pubs.
The proceeds from the raffle draws helped to build the village hall.
As of now, she has served as the secretary of the Thurgoland Village Welfare for more than 50 years.
Margaret has been a driving force for the church, helping out with many of its operations.
As a founding member of the Thurgoland Thespians, she also takes a prominent role in all of the annual pantomimes spanning over 40 years.
Margaret’s creative streak has led to her acting in and directing numerous plays and musicals.
Her unwavering determination has led to her personally crafting countless costumes and an extensive collection of props.
Margaret’s good deeds extend deep into the community, creating a positive effect on people of all ages.
She is a prominent volunteer helper for the Luncheon Club, serving hot meals and organising socials for lonely people over 65.
Margaret has also been instrumental in running the village’s youth club.
Her hard work has promoted several activities and opportunities to the benefit of local teenagers and young adults.
Alongside Margaret touching the lives of countless people, she has always cared for the environment.
This passion has led to her organising village litter picks and helping with projects such as the Coronation Garden.
Margaret’s exceptional contribution to Thurgoland has been recognised, especially by nominator John Anderson.
He said: “I propose Margaret for this special award as her long-standing voluntary contribution to Thurgoland has been outstanding.
“The impact on the community has been transformational.”
