TEENAGE forwards Lewis Gould and Leo Farrell showed there is some depth in attacking talent in Barnsley under 21s’ 4-3 loss to Peterborough United on Tuesday.
The Reds first team have been low on forwards this season with Conor Hourihane and his staff watching in midweek as the tall and powerful pair impressed.
Two-goal Gould, who mainly plays as a winger, joined as a 19-year-old from ninth-tier Sussex club Crawley Down Gatwick earlier this season.
Farrell, who registered a goal and assist, has come through the under 18s, making several cup appearances for the first team and being on the league bench once this season.
Kelechi Nwakali continued his run of appearances for the under 21s, having missed out on a move in the summer with the windows of all the leagues in Europe now being closed.
The Nigeria international midfielder has not been involved with Hourihane’s squad all season.
The visitors scored past Jackson Smith in the sixth and eighth minutes then had the ball in the back of the net in the tenth but it was controversially ruled out for offside.
Barnsley fought their way back into the match and good finishes by Gould and Farrell – from a fine Nwakali pass – made it 2-2 at the interval.
Kieran Graham was given a straight red card minutes into the second half for a tackle deemed dangerous by the referee.
It was 3-2 soon after when Farrell unselfishly squared for Gould to score but Peterborough scored two late goals to win it.
The under 21s are due to visit Sheffield United on Tuesday.
