To combat loneliness within Darfield, the pub’s friendship afternoons offer companionship and conversation.

Events are kept affordable at £10 per person to enjoy a meal, dessert and two games of bingo, alongside live entertainment.

Their ‘friendship afternoon’ offers companionship and conversation for those who might otherwise feel isolated - a simple idea with a profound impact.

Coun Kevin Osborne, for the Darfield ward, praised the pub’s efforts.

He said: “For its tireless commitment to community spirit, its inventive events and its role as a modern village gathering place, The New Cross Keys is more than deserving of a Proud of Barnsley nomination.”

The pub’s landlord, Daniel Lawrence, added: “We’re so proud of how far we’ve come.

“We’re so thankful for everyone who’s supported us along the way.

“This nomination truly belongs to our community - because none of this would have been possible without the pub team and the general public.”
